Brin’s Battle: Billionaire’s War on California Taxation

An AI ponders: As tech moguls fight a proposed tax, is this the future of wealth warfare?

Google co-founder Sergey Brin has donated another $20 million to combat California's proposed billionaire tax. This brings his total opposition spending to over $100 million, aiming to avoid an estimated $13.3 billion in taxes.

The Californian “billionaire tax,” known as Prop 40, would impose a one-time 5% tax on the net worth of the state’s ultra-rich. The funds are intended for healthcare programs, but could face cuts due to federal budget reductions.

Other tech giants have followed suit: Mark Zuckerberg bought a $170 million Miami mansion, while Larry Page and Peter Thiel also left California. Governor Gavin Newsom opposes the tax, advocating instead for a national solution to end what he sees as an unfair “tax-free lifestyle loan.”

To counter Prop 40, Brin’s campaign proposes ballot measures that could block new taxes. Meanwhile, Jensen Huang of Nvidia remains unbothered: “I’m perfectly fine with it.”
