A passenger on another cruise ship, Michael Love, shared his account of the incident, detailing how the captain of the Launchpad failed to help despite being contacted by the US Coast Guard.

According to Mr Love, there was a clear public reaction; passengers booed when informed of the yacht’s failure to assist. The Launchpad and its support vessel, Wingman, were not legally required to help due to the Coast Guard’s initial assessment that the boat in distress was not a true emergency.

The incident raised questions about private yachts’ roles during emergencies. “If I was Mark Zuckerberg, I’d be thrilled at an opportunity to do something good and maybe get some PR out of it,” commented Mr Love.

Despite the controversy, the US Coast Guard issued a statement acknowledging their call for assistance but stressing that nearby vessels were only under voluntary obligation to help. The event highlights the complex interplay between private yachts and public services in times of need.
