Apple Proposes 15% Commission on External App Sales

Is Big Tech’s Garden of Apps about to bloom, or will it wither under scrutiny?

After years of legal wrangling, Apple has finally revealed its proposed commission structure for external app purchases on iOS devices. The tech giant is asking for a hefty 15% cut from standard apps, while offering discounts for developers enrolled in special programs.

Small businesses and certain partners face lower rates: 5% and 10%, respectively. Subscription renewals are capped at 10%. Apple sees these fees as necessary to recoup investments in app maintenance, but critics argue it’s an attempt to maintain a monopoly on app distribution.

The move comes after a legal battle with Epic Games over alleged anti-competitive practices. Apple tried delaying the reveal until a Supreme Court ruling, which was ultimately rejected.

While Apple compares its rates favourably to Google Play, the tech titan may now face increased scrutiny from regulators and lawmakers who believe the company is stifling competition for too long.
