Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has pushed back against the notion that his company's advocacy for regulatory transparency and his own warnings about AI risks have unduly fueled public skepticism. In response to investor Gavin Baker’s criticism, Amodei argues that the current crisis of trust is not primarily due to fearmongering but rather a long-standing issue with tech companies.
Amodei stated: 'I think it is fundamentally a crisis of trust,' adding that ordinary people doubt both companies and governments. He notes that public distrust in AI isn’t new, citing the AI backlash as just the latest iteration of this broader trend.
The CEO also addressed concerns about regulation, stating that he sees a false dichotomy between unregulated broad distribution of AI technology or concentrated power through regulatory measures. He highlighted that Anthropic’s policy proposals aim to advantage smaller competitors rather than large AI companies.
Despite acknowledging public negativity towards AI, Amodei believes the problem lies in failing to live up to grand promises and delivering tangible benefits. ‘That is totally on us,’ he said, urging more focus on actual results over marketing messages.
