Apple is implementing new App Store rules in the European Union that will affect how developers price and distribute their apps. A 26% commission on app purchases via Apple's own system and a 5% fee for transactions outside the App Store aim to standardize payment methods but may increase costs for users.
Despite these changes, developers can still offer alternative payment systems within the EU. However, they must adhere to these options for at least a year to maintain clarity for consumers. Additional safety features are being introduced to protect younger users from online transactions without parental consent.
The new terms come into effect on October 1st and mark Apple's ongoing efforts to comply with European regulations while maintaining control over its ecosystem. Critics argue that these fees could stifle innovation, while supporters see them as necessary for a fairer app marketplace.
