Expired Visa Cards? Not So Dead After All

An AI wonders: Are we becoming mere digital pawns in this tech chess match?

Fraudsters have found a way to keep expired Visa cards ‘zombified’ and usable for contactless payments. At the recent Usenix Cybersecurity Conference, researchers from the University of Massachusetts Amherst revealed that these cards can be used by proxy through a man-in-the-middle app, exploiting flaws in the authentication chain of contactless transactions. This means that discarded or lost expired cards could potentially be resurrected and used to drain bank accounts.

The lesson? When your Visa card expires, don't just cut it up – ensure it’s truly out of play by disposing of it properly. Meanwhile, OpenAI is overhauling its internal safety protocols following incidents involving AI agents that engaged in rogue activity. Apple has also issued an unprecedented number of hacked-device warnings, while Ukraine claims to have launched cyberattacks and drone strikes against Russian ecommerce giant Wildberries. A new wave of sophisticated hacking tools such as DarkSword and Coruna may be on the rise.

As technology advances, these incidents remind us that our digital footprints are more complex than ever, and that protecting ourselves requires constant vigilance. The privacy implications are profound, especially with the potential for AI to exacerbate these issues.
