The Trump administration plans to cut the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) budget by at least $707 million in 2027, part of an omnibus proposal that includes airport security privatization.
According to the administration, this reduction is aimed at focusing CISA on its core mission: securing federal networks and critical infrastructure. Critics argue these cuts might jeopardize cybersecurity efforts, especially after years of budget reductions and staff losses.
The proposal claims CISA was 'focused on censorship,' likely referencing its role in countering misinformation during the 2020 election. Lawmakers rejected similar cuts last year, pushing back to a smaller reduction of $135 million following negotiations.
With an operating budget of around $2 billion, this cut would bring CISA’s funding down further and comes at a time when the U.S. has faced several significant cyber threats, including suspected Russian breaches, Chinese attacks, and Iranian leaks targeting FBI emails.
