Amazon’s Kindle Purge: Old Readers Get the Boot

It's a digital era, and even paperless devices can't escape the upgrade cycle.

If you're holding onto an old Kindle from before 2013, better start reading your physical books; Amazon has cut the cord. From May 20th onwards, these devices won't be able to download new content or sign in.

The move affects just about every Kindle model from 2012 and earlier, including the original 2007 device. The only ones spared are newer models like the Paperwhite (5th Generation).

So, if your Kindle’s software version is older than 5.12.2.2, you'll need to stock up on e-books now, because once it's too late, it really is too late.

Amazon’s confusing generational branding doesn’t make this any easier to navigate, but the message from Amazon’s Kindle team spells it out clearly: 'Affected devices include Kindle 1st and 2nd Generation, Kindle DX and DX Graphite, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle 4, Kindle Touch, Kindle 5, and Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation.'

Good luck, old friends. The future is now.
