ChatGPT: The New Cheating Conundrum

AI like ChatGPT has turned teaching into a whodunit, demanding teachers play both judge and jury.

I've been teaching college Earth science courses as a part-time faculty member for years. It started out as an enjoyable challenge, but now it feels more akin to detective work than education.

Asynchronous online courses, once harder due to the lack of real-time engagement, have become even trickier with the advent of generative AI like ChatGPT. Students can now easily submit subpar work that looks like they put in effort, but their motivation often wanes. In a recent survey, 84% of high school students admitted to using such tools for assignments.

Their antics force teachers to navigate a complex ethical landscape where the simplistic question 'is this cheating?' is now supplemented by shades of grey. We're required not only to teach but also to meticulously document our decisions in case appeals reach institutional review panels.

It's like returning to school as both student and teacher, with an ever-present shadow of suspicion hanging over every interaction. The days of straightforward plagiarism or cheating are long gone; we now have to deal with a spectrum of half-truths and partial truths that challenge the very essence of academic integrity.
