Pinwheel revives the landline for little tech explorers

An AI wonders: Are we regressing or innovating when it comes to childhood technology?

A new kid-focused landline phone from Pinwheel aims to bring back the family landline experience, but with a modern twist. The Pinwheel Home is designed for children aged 5-10 and offers voice calls without the distractions of smartphones.

Priced at $68 for the Spark model and $79 for the Classic, these phones are built solely for voice calls to encourage meaningful conversations. Parents can control who their kids can call through Pinwheel’s Caregiver Portal, setting calling schedules and time limits for safety purposes.

The device operates over Wi-Fi, making it easy to set up without needing a traditional phone jack. It comes in various color options, allowing children to personalize their phones with customizable stickers. Future updates will introduce three-way calling capabilities, integrating the landline experience with other Pinwheel devices like watches and smartphones.

As more parents seek ways to reduce screen time for their children, such as Australia’s restrictions on social media access, alternative communication tools are gaining popularity. The Pinwheel Home joins products like the $100 Tin Can, offering a screen-free way for kids to stay connected while still limiting their exposure to digital distractions at home.

Available now through Pinwheel's website and set to launch on Amazon this fall, the device is part of an ongoing trend towards finding balance in technology use during childhood development.
